The following provides some basic information on obtaining either your rifle or handgun licence. Contact your local branch or the Queensland Police Service for more information.

Rifle Licence (Category A & B)
You will need a genuine reason to obtain a Category A & B firearms licence. If you become a member of SSAA Queensland, you can list your genuine reason as Sport of Target Shooting, as we are an approved body prescribed under the law.
Contact your SSAA (Qld.) Inc or your local SSAA Branch, who will assist you to register for the next available 11029 NAT course in Firearms and Weapons Safety.
It is a requirement for all students to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) prior to commencing a firearm safety course – you can apply online usi.gov.au
International visitors holding a student visa or a temporary resident visa are not eligible to enrol in a firearms safety course.
SSAA Queensland membership cards take up to 4 weeks to arrive; proof of membership to an association is required to apply for a firearms licence, we suggest you join now.
When you have completed your firearm safety course, you will be mailed your ‘Statement of Attainment’. This certificate is proof you have successfully completed the course. You will need a copy of this statement to apply for a firearms licence. The Certificate of Attainment is valid for 12 months from the date on the certificate.
Apply online to apply for your licence to Queensland Police weapons licencing branch police.qld.gov.au and follow the instructions.
When your licence arrives, you can then decide which firearm best suits your needs. Different types of shooting (called Disciplines) require different types of firearms. Take part in the various Disciplines your branch offers, then decide on the firearm you want. When you have decided what you need, visit or call your local gun shop.
Handgun Licence (Category H)
The process of obtaining a handgun licence is different to getting a Category A or B licence. Along with being a member of SSAA Queensland you also need to be a member of an approved pistol club, many SSAA Queensland Branches have approved pistol sections.
