Tucked into the Tablelands near Tinaroo, SSAA Atherton is a branch with a long history and a steady sense of purpose. Its roots go back to 1968, when the Tablelands Pistol Club first set up a range at a disused quarry. What started as a simple local facility has grown into a well-established SSAA Queensland branch that continues to serve shooters across the region. 

The property itself spans just less than four hectares, with a layout that makes the most of the space. Through time, the range has evolved to support a wide mix of disciplines. Members have access to metallic silhouette out to 100 metres, an indoor air pistol range, a service match range, a standard 25-metre range and a practical shooting setup. It is the sort of place where different shooting interests can coexist, whether you are chasing competition or just looking to spend a few hours on the range. 

The branch has about 400 members, with a core group of regular shooters who keep things ticking along week to week. Like many regional clubs, it relies on that consistent group of volunteers and competitors who show up, help out, and make sure everything runs smoothly. 

On the first Sunday of each month, the branch hosts a combined social day and working bee. It is a simple idea but has proven effective in getting people out. Members lend a hand with maintenance, then stick around for a chat. It keeps the facility in good shape while also building the kind of camaraderie that makes people want to come back. 

The branch has also shown a willingness to open its doors a little wider. It has been hosting popular Level 2 IPSC competitions, along with Ladies Day shoots that have been well received. There has even been a community shoot day with the local Men’s Shed, which is the sort of initiative that helps bridge the gap between the club and the broader community. 

Facilities on site include a clubhouse, kitchen and amenities, with further improvements already on the radar. Plans are in place to upgrade the toilet block, increase storage and look at longer term additions like a children’s area. There is also a push towards practical upgrades, including managing water runoff on the property and moving away from generator power through the installation of solar. 

Accessibility is another area the branch is looking to improve. While vehicles can get close to the ranges and clubhouse, more formal provisions are part of future planning. These goals are essentially to make the range as usable and welcoming as possible for all members. 

Like many clubs, Atherton is not standing still. It continues to build on its history while making small, steady improvements. A great team make up the committee and work hard for the club and its members. The club is in good hands and will continue to grow and develop into the future.
