Wedgetail lists new Orion Bolt-action

It seems the latest offering from Wedgetail Industries will be a bolt-action rifle called the Orion Hunter – a name likely drawing inspiration from the Orion constellation, which is also known as the ‘hunter’.

It’s expected the Orion will be released at the Deer Expo in Victoria in October.

Plans for the new rifle recently surfaced in the National Firearms Identification Database (NFID), revealing key specifications ahead of the rifle’s official release which is likely to be around October 2025.

The NFID entry classifies the Orion Hunter as a bolt-action, centre-fire rifle with a detachable box magazine. This marks Wedgetail’s first venture into the bolt-action space and signals a shift toward the hunting market for the fast-growing Australian manufacturer best known for its tactical platforms.

The listing suggests compatibility with a Remington 700-style trigger system, meaning a wide range of aftermarket parts will be available. The CAD renders show a short-action design with a fluted bolt handle, integrated Picatinny rail, and a sleek carbon-fibre composite stock.

Multiple calibres have been registered for the model, covering everything from varmint to medium game. However, this list is likely to be narrowed to suit popular Australian hunting preferences before release.

According to some sources, the Orion Hunter is scheduled to be unveiled at the 2025 Wild Deer Hunting & Outdoors Expo in Victoria in October later this year. It’s an exciting time for Australian firearm manufacturers and Australian hunters alike.
