From dust to dunes: GME CB delivers loud and clear

From dust to dunes: GME CB delivers loud and clear

The GME TX6165XO is a high-performance handheld UHF CB designed for serious outdoor use. Identical in functionality to the TX6165X, the ‘XO’ version adds a blaze orange casing that makes it easier to spot in the bush, on a worksite, or among camping gear. Backed by GME’s reputation for rugged Australian-built radios, this model is aimed at off-roaders, adventurers and professionals needing reliable communication.

With a 2600mAh Li-Ion battery pack, this small unit will last you up to 30 hours.

At its core, the TX6165XO delivers five watts of transmission power, the maximum legal output for UHF CB in Australia. A switchable one watt low-power mode allows users to conserve battery life when long range isn’t needed. This was perfect when I went four-wheel driving recently, allowing me to communicate to the car in front for hours, while still maintaining strong audio quality. The radio runs on a 2600 mAh lithium-ion battery pack, which GME claims can last up to 30 hours in low-power mode, which I can definitely vouch for. On the high five-watt setting, the CB still maintains around 15-20 hours of use, depending on how much you use it, which is incredible for such a small unit and perfect for long days fishing or bushing whacking on remote hiking trails with no access to power.

Durability is a standout. The TX6165XO is completely dustproof and can withstand immersion in one metre of water for up to 30 minutes. Luckily, I didn’t need to test that theory, but I have complete confidence that it holds up to these claims. Its rugged build makes it suitable for tough environments, whether that’s a muddy trail, a dusty worksite or the sandy dunes that I took it on, almost being completely buried when trying to dig the car out. On top of all of this, it just feels like a well-built product, holding it gives me confidence to take it wherever I need, what more would you expect from GME, honestly.

Audio quality is another strength. A two-watt forward-facing speaker provides loud and clear sound, with consistently good voice clarity. In my opinion, one of the hardest things to do is read the screen on a CB when sun is beaming down on you and the glare from the water is unbearable when you’re out on the water. But with the high-contrast LCD display on this piece, this problem is virtually non-existent, it is easy to read in bright sunlight, while the rotary power/volume knob and a programmable button provide simple, intuitive control. Extra features such as dual and triple watch, priority channel scanning and even a built-in LED torch make it more versatile than basic handhelds, and of course you can’t forget the belt clip that just doesn’t let go. I like to keep it clipped onto my ‘oh crap’ handle, purely for convenience.

The TX6165XO package includes the radio, lithium-ion battery, desktop charging cradle, AC adaptor, antenna and belt clip. However, accessories like a vehicle charger, waterproof speaker mic, or earpiece are sold separately. This can add a bit to the cost if you want a full setup, but this isn’t too much of an issue if you just want the unit for shorter trips with access to power.

Another limitation is the charging system; it relies on the supplied cradle rather than offering a USB-C or similar charging socket, which would be more convenient for travel, especially considering that most people would want to charge it from their car. This did prompt me to get the 12V vehicle charging mount, which is really the only addition I needed, really rounding out the versatility for the use I required of it. It allowed me to go out for a week-long trip, without the need of a heavy-duty generator or expensive solar set up.

The belt clip makes it easy to attach to anything!

Overall, the GME TX6165XO is a robust, reliable handheld UHF CB that excels in battery life, durability and usability. While the need for additional accessories and reliance on cradle charging are minor drawbacks, it remains one of the best options for anyone needing a tough, long-range handheld radio. If you want anything more, you going need to get a complete CB set up for your car. This CB knows its job and it does it to a tee. For four-wheel drivers, campers or professionals in remote areas, it’s a dependable tool that justifies its reputation.
