President’s Message

As shooters, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, we have a strong connection to the landscapes we enjoy and a vested interest in seeing them remain healthy for future generations.

Across Queensland, SSAA members contribute to conservation in many ways. Whether it’s assisting with pest animal control, supporting habitat restoration projects, reporting wildlife sightings or simply being active custodians of the bush, shooters are often among the people spending the most time on the ground.

A great example of this commitment is the ongoing work at the SSAA Queensland Stewartdale Shooting Club near Ipswich. Recently, SSAA Queensland President Jeff Ross and Bob Green met with Andrew Powell MP, Minister for Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation, to discuss the ongoing progress of our koala reserve at Stewartdale.

This project has been one of many examples of how SSAA Queensland contributes to conservation. Years of planning and work have helped create a reserve that is now able to assist koala populations wherever the need arises, providing an important resource for the future protection of one of Queensland’s most iconic species.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the ongoing restrictions affecting access to Queensland National Parks following the COVID period. Encouragingly, Minister Powell showed genuine interest in the proposals put forward by SSAA Queensland, and the discussion was positive and constructive.

Conservation and responsible access to public land are issues that matter to many of our members. We will continue working with government and other stakeholders to ensure the voice of Queensland shooters is heard, and we will keep members updated as developments occur.
