SSAA Bundaberg (April 2026 The Report)

Established in1989, SSAA Bundaberg has grown into an expansive and versatile shooting facility. Initially, it operated across different grounds, but with significant development work soon after opening, the branch is firmly established at its Q32 complex on Childers Road, about 25 kilometres from the Bundaberg CBD.  

The site spans more than 350 hectares under a Range Authority Group, providing ample space for multiple disciplines and future expansion. A separate Big Bore Rifle Club also operates on a leased section of the property. 

Membership currently sits between an impressive 2,500 and 3,000. However, like many clubs, Bundaberg is conscious of the need to grow participation among women and juniors. 

“We have found it difficult to get involvement in this area,” says Shane McEwan, Vice President – Central Region Development. “I believe we need to work harder.” 

Despite those challenges, the range is well equipped to cater for a broad range of shooters. Most areas offer wheelchair access, with undercover firing points, shaded seating and kitchen facilities that make match days both practical and social. The land is leased from the Queensland State Government and zoned as a shooting range, giving the branch long-term operational stability. 

“We can open seven days a week,” says Shane. “Providing we don’t break any noise laws; we have an open run.” 

Additionally, local police utilise the facility for training, and various other organisations hire the complex throughout the year. 

All these factors have created security for the facility and has enabled the club to steadily expand its offerings while continuing to invest in ongoing maintenance and future improvements.  

Competitions and championships 

SSAA Bundaberg regularly features on the state calendar and hosts a wide range of disciplines. Each year, the club takes a particular focus on Action Pistol events at the venue. This year, the branch will host two Open events and a State Title. These competitions will be used to select teams for the upcoming World Action Pistol event at Toowoomba later this year. 

The pistol range has also hosted Metallic Silhouette State Titles, showing Bundaberg’s eagerness and reputation for hosting serious competitions. But, the biggest milestone is still to come. Bundaberg is set to host the World Action Pistol Championships (WAPC) in 2030, a major international event that will bring competitors from across the globe to the Wide Bay. 

“I attended the WAPC in New Zealand last year and it gave me an insight into how much work has to be done before this can go ahead and be a success,” says Shane. “I’ll have my work cut out getting ready for it.”

Usage of the range is priced reasonably, and annual range passes are available, giving unlimited access to the range during opening times, including practice and branch level competitions – basically as much as you want to shoot.
