Nestled among the bushland of Queensland’s Southern Downs, SSAA Inglewood offers members more than just a place to shoot. With abundant birdlife, wallabies and a relaxed atmosphere, the branch has earned a reputation as a welcoming destination where visitors can enjoy not only their shooting, but also the outdoors.
The branch was established more than 20 years ago by the late Tom Donald, whose contribution to the club remains an important part of its history. A range at the facility has been dedicated in his honour, recognising the role he played in creating what has become a valued shooting range.
The branch has about 140 members and caters to the most common types of shooting. Facilities include a 300m rifle range, 50m pistol range, clay target shooting and Western Action disciplines. The club attracts a mix of members, including women and junior shooters, and regularly welcomes visitors from Brisbane and other areas who are looking to spend a few days enjoying the branch.
Operating off the grid, the site features several practical ‘bush innovations’ developed over the years, including an open-air clubhouse, bush kitchen, shaded seating areas, campground, showers and amenities, which provide everything visitors need for an enjoyable stay. The peaceful setting makes it just as appealing for those wanting to relax and take in the surrounding wildlife as it is for those spending time on the firing line.
Accessibility is also a priority. The club currently caters for limited-sight shooters and has wheelchair-friendly access throughout much of the facility. Club President Kelvin Randall is a passionate advocate for adaptive shooting and hopes to one day compete at the Paralympic Games.
Looking to the future, the branch hopes to upgrade its amenities, particularly the female toilets and disability access facilities, while also extending the existing 200m range. The committee is keen to attract more shooters and would like to host additional events in the years ahead, as it did for the 2017 State Muzzleloading Championships.
Perhaps the most unique and impressive part of Inglewood – as well as maybe of any shooting range – is the working trainline Kevin is currently developing to travel throughout the grounds.
For those seeking a friendly country shooting club, SSAA Inglewood offers a step back in time, combining practical facilities, genuine hospitality and a strong connection to the bush.
