If you are a junior shooter, you should know that you are a vital member of Australia's sport shooting fraternity. You are the future of our sport! If you are a family member or friend of a young person who has shown interest in the shooting sports, encourage and support them in their interest and help them be the best sportsperson they can be.
Shooting is one of the few sports that encourages and caters for the participation of the young and old, males and females, able-bodied and disabled. The SSAA and sport shooting in general is a family-orientated pastime and the whole family can enjoy a new-found group of friends, as well as many challenges, once the involvement begins.
Most disciplines within SSAA have a Junior component so if you are keen to shoot a particular discipline, make contact with the relevant Chairman via these and our National website contacts. Your National or State Championships are run in conjunction with your chosen discipline and all Juniors are separated into two categories for those right up to the age of 15 years and then from 15 years to 18 years of age.
S.S.A.A. (Qld) Inc. runs specific Junior Qld State Postal Competitions in Rimfire Field Rifle & Rimfire Silhouette Rifle annually from 1 April to 31 August. These are open to all junior S.S.A.A. members who belong to a Qld Branch. The State Association actively encourages all junior members to complete in these events.
Score sheets must include the following: age group (11 - 15 yrs or 15 - 18 yrs), date of event, where completed, home Branch, and must be signed by the supervising RO or Committee Member.
Field Rifle score cards must include individual scores for each position. Silhouette Rifle scores must have each individual shot recorded in order. Only one score is to be submitted for each event and all entries must be received by the Qld Junior Sporting Shooters Chairman no later than the end of the first week in September.
The SSAA Qld State Junior (shoulder-to-shoulder) Championships consist of:
- Rimfire Field Rifle
- Rimfire Rifle Silhouette
- A third event chosen by the Host Branch for that year
It is a 2 day event usually held midyear with the Host Branch being chosen on a rotational basis from throughout the five Zones within Qld. There is often a day of extra Coaching attached to these Championships for those who wish to avail themselves of top level shooter assistance. The SSAA provides assistance and instruction in the skilful, proper and safe usage of firearms for field and target shooting. Junior Development Programs have been developed by the various SSAA State and Territory associations and are provided for your guidance.
S.S.A.A. nationally runs annual Junior Postal Competitions in Rimfire Rifle Silhouette (1 February to 30 July) and Rimfire Field Rifle (1 July to 31 October) with entries to be sent to the National Junior Sporting Shooters Chairman promptly at the end of these time periods. The National Association generously supports these initiatives each year with encouragement patches and prize draws for participants.
An Interstate Junior Challenge is also held annually on a rotational basis throughout many of the States and Qld shooters often travel to these events as participants and do well.
Whether at the shooting range or hunting in the field, there are many interesting ways to participate in and enjoy the shooting sports. The Junior Shooter is a special National S.S.A.A. newsletter intended for our junior members. It contains stories and helpful hints about target shooting and hunting, information about firearm safety and the legal requirements of shooting, as well as recipes, puzzles and competitions. Each month, our S.S.A.A. magazines include competitions for our junior members to enter. There are great prizes to be won.
